The Luminous Table for an urban design that is inclusive and cares for well-being
A tool realised by Politecnico di Milano in collaboration with Università Statale di Milano
The Luminous Planning Table (LPT) was presented at Politecnico. It is an innovative phygital platform that combines physical and digital models to support the processes of planning, evaluating and understanding urban transformations.
The first version of the 'Luminous Table' was conceived and developed by a research group coordinated by Barbara Piga and working at the LABSIMURB Lab of Politecnico di Milano’s Department of Architecture and Urban Studies. Thanks to the synergy with Marco Boffi, professor in Social and Environmental Psychology at Università degli Studi di Milano, the LPT has reached today its 'version 2', enriched by the analysis of the link between space and community, between the design of places and people's well-being.
Thanks to its user-friendly, multi-user platform, the 'Luminous Table' allows professionals and stakeholders to interact directly with the simulated three-dimensional environment, experiencing in real time the effects of architectural and environmental space variations: shading, the visual perception of spaces, atmospheric and temperature variations.
The direct exploration functions, interactive capability and facilitation of a collaborative design approach make LPT a state-of-the-art tool that enhances the understanding and allows to improve the effects of design solutions, thus contributing to the increase the quality of urban environments,
Barbara Piga explained.
The synergy between the research groups of the two Universities has already led to the development of exp-EIA, an innovative methodology integrated in an augmented and virtual reality app, a web-platform for participatory urban planning and design and LPT. This ecosystem helps to communicate the effects of urban transformations more effectively to both citizens and stakeholders, providing planners and decision-makers with data on the psychological and environmental impact of projects, fostering transparent and inclusive decision-making processes.
The joint project of Politecnico di Milano and Università Statale di Milano is part of the activities of Spoke 1 'Urban regeneration - Cities of Tomorrow' of MUSA - Multilayared Urban Sustainability Action, a project funded by the European Union (NextGenerationEU, NRRP Mission 4 Component 2 Investment Line 1.5: Creating and strengthening 'innovation ecosystems', building 'local R&D leaders').
