An accident occurs when, as a result of an accidental event, one or more employees suffer physical injuries that require medical attention for treatment. A student or pupil in a university institution where laboratories, work equipment in general, chemical, physical and biological agents and equipment with video terminals are used is also treated as an employee (Italian Legislative Decree No 91/2008, Art. 2(1)(a).
A commuting accident occurs on the home to work or work to home commuting and during trips related to teaching and research activities carried out also using private, public or University-owned means of transport. Accidents can occur:

  • during participation in institutional activities organised by the University or authorised in advance by the teaching staff, including activities carried out abroad
  • during attendance, stay and transfer from facility to facility at the same University or at regional companies for the right to university study
  • during participation in events or demonstrations at facilities through which the institutional activities of the University are carried out.
  • while carrying out activities at study centres, experimental fields, industrial, commercial, agricultural establishments, mines, construction sites
  • during guided tours, study trips, practical training (curricular and extracurricular) provided that they have been authorised in advance by the University bodies.

What to do in the event of an accident

All employees at the University, including students and their associates, shall comply with the following procedures, depending on where the accident occurs:

Contact the Local Safety Officer of the Facility where you were at the time of the accident. The documents required to open a claim at INAIL are:

  • first aid medical certificate issued to the injured person
  • accident report

The Safety Officer or the Manager/Director will then notify the University Prevention and Protection Service (SPP) of the accident and forward the documentation to the relevant University facilities as soon as possible (within 48 hours). Additionally:

  • report to the HR - PTA Management Service for accidents occurring to Technical-Administrative Staff (including those with fixed-term contracts) 
  • report to the HR - Selection and Competitions Service for accidents occurring to Temporary Research Fellows and Adjunct Professors 
  • report to the HR - Teaching Staff Service for accidents occurring to Lecturers (Associate and Full Professors) and Researchers 
  • report directly to the Prevention and Protection Service for accidents occurring to students, curricular and extra curricular trainees at other companies, scholarship holders, PhD students
