Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) is a key university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education of China and is one of the oldest universities in China. The predecessor of Xi'an Jiaotong University was Nanyang College, which was founded in 1896 in Shanghai and renamed Jiaotong University in 1921. Today XJTU is a comprehensive research university with 10 major categories of disciplines: science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, humanities, law, philosophy, education and art. Xi'an Jiaotong University has developed exchange programmes with universities in numerous countries including: USA, Japan, UK, France, Germany, New Zeland, Corea and Italy. In September 2019 Politecnico di Milano has inaugurated together with XJTU the Joint School of Design an Innovation Centre, its first campus to be located outside Italy. The Centre is hosted in a building designed by a team of Polimi architects, in a strategical area which includes the Western China Science and Technology Innovation Harbour, the iHarbour, where many Fortune Top100 companies are setting up offices. The Sino-Italian centre aims at providing an international platform for developing skills and realising projects to support the technological innovation of Italian and Chinese companies alike. Its main areas of interest are: Cars: e-vehicles, autonomous driving, fleet management. Advanced manufacturing: digitalization, robotics. Energy: smart grids, green technologies, renewable sources. Digital transformation: innovative business models, omnichannel marketing strategies, data-powered decision making.
