Politecnico has established around 30 mobility agreements with Chinese Universities, ranging from Bachelor to Doctoral level and covering Architecture, Design and Engineering disciplines.
Participating students spend from 6 months to 2 years in China, attending courses taught in English and/or preparing their thesis. At the same time, they have the opportunity to:
- attend Chinese language classes
- carry out internships in local or multinational companies, experiencing a dynamic and stimulating working environment
- conduct research in cutting-edge laboratories
Living in China and adapting to a culture very different from yours requires a big effort, but it also a unique occasion to overcome prejudices and stereotyping and to become more aware of your own potential.
Polimi in China
Starting from the first students’ mobility agreements signed in 2001, Polimi’s presence in China has grown during the years, not only in terms of numbers (institutions and students involved) but also of collaboration’s quality.
Politecnico has succeeded in consolidating its relationship with some among the most prestigious Chinese universities (including Beihang, Shanghai Jiaotong, Tianjin, Tongji, Tsinghua and Xi’an Jiaotong University), to the point of developing country-to-country projects and participating in universities alliances.
In this context Polimi has identified a few strategic partners with whom to implement framework agreements which include sharing physical spaces and collaborating on different levels:
- University education
- Post-graduate education
- Technological transfer
- Start up incubation
Two are the strategic projects already implemented.
Strategic projects
- China-Italy Design Innovation Hub, Tsinghua University
Following an agreement signed by Polimi and Tsinghua Rectors, at the presence of Sergio Mattarella and Xi Jinping, in 2018 the China-Italy Innovation Hub was inaugurated. Hosted in Milano, nearby Politecnico’s Bovisa campus, is the first educational and research base that Tsinghua University has established in Europe.

In 2019 was inaugurated in Xi’an (China) the XJTU-POLIMI Joint School of Design and Innovation, hosted in a building designed by Polimi’s architects. The Joint School is the result of a long-term collaboration between our university and Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU).
Check the Joint school website for more information about mobility opportunities and past years’ students’ experiences.
Politecnico is also part of the University Alliance of the Silk Road, a global network including more than 150 higher education institutions, founded by XJTU in 2015.
