Descrizione dell'iniziativa

OCAD University will host students, faculty, and industry experts from across the globe in an intensive summer school that aims to develop projects that reflect on the design transitions due to the climate crisis. The charette will be held from the 9th to the 13th of June, 2025.
Over the course of the workshop, the participants will follow design thinking methodology - define, ideate, develop, prototype, and deliver. Teams will have access to faculty and industry leaders for guidance while they develop their deliverables. Participants will benefit from networking with peers and thought leaders, learning design thinking tools and methodologies in a collaborative environment, rapid ideation and iteration, communication design, all while working on real-life projects. This year's Design Charrette will explore the theme of Affordable Housing with a focus on student housing. The selected projects cover areas such as city planning, architecture and interior design, urban agriculture, heritage conservation and revitalization, and will also include students in environmental design, graphic design, brand design, and business design. The charrette will have a first phase of design-driven research, where through site visits, interviews, and research, the students will develop innovative design solutions. The second part of the week will be devoted to produce a schematic project that will be discussed with local stakeholders and international experts.
What is a Charrette?
A charrette is a collaborative and creative process that brings together diverse groups of stakeholders to develop innovative solutions to complex problems. Over an intensive period of brainstorming, discussion and expert consultation, multidisciplinary teams realize concepts and deliverables that align with a central theme or challenge. Participants are encouraged to tackle problems using design thinking methodologies and collaborative design proactive, gaining new perspectives that can generate innovative results. While charrettes originated in urban planning and architecture as a way to bring together community, developers, and professional consultants to generate solutions around a common goal, we have adopted this methodology for strategic foresight & innovation, business planning, educational design, PSS (product, service, system design) and prototyping. Our design charrettes create inclusive, co-creative environments that bring people together to imagine, plan and implement a common future.
