Alfio Maria Quarteroni

Professor emeritus of Politecnico di Milano

Alfio Quarteroni is one of Italy's and the world's most eminent scientists in the field of mathematics (1st in Italy and 48th in the world according to Top Mathematics Scientists 2022; 1st in Italy, 5th in Europe, 34th in the world according to AD Scientific Index 2022). He holds a degree in Mathematics from the University of Pavia and an honorary PhD in Naval Engineering from the University of Trieste, is Emeritus Professor at EPFL Lausanne,and founder and president of MOXOFF. Alfio Quarteroni was a full professor at Politecnico di Milano, EPFL Lausanne, University of Minnesota and University of Brescia, as well as a researcher at CNR, P&M Curie University in Paris and Istituto Donegani in Novara. He also was a visiting professor at Stanford University, University of Paris, Texas A&M University, University of Bonn, as well as a visiting scientist at NASA - Langley.

Alfio Quarteroni is Editor in Chief/Associate Editor of 4 book series and Associate Editor of 32 scientific journals. He is author of 24 books, editor of 12 books, author of more than 400 articles and conference presentations. To date, the H-indexing of his scientific production is as follows: 90 (Google Scholar), 57 (Scopus), citations: 54,000 (Google Scholar), 12,500 (Scopus).

Alfio Quarteroni taught numerous courses in the fields of mathematics and numerical analysis at Politecnico di Milano, University of Brescia, University of Pavia, University of Minnesota and EPFL in Lausanne. He was the mentor/supervisor of 66 PhD students in mathematics (among the top 100 supervisors of all time), as well as 60 students of Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) and more than 100 post-doc students, many of whom have become full professors at the most prestigious Universities worldwide. Alfio Quarteroni delivered 56 invited lectures and 540 seminars at the world's most prestigious institutions, organised and chaired 41 international congresses and was principal investigator of 96 research contracts funded by public and private institutions worldwide.

The research fields in which Alfio Quarteroni has achieved world renown are mathematical modelling, numerical analysis and scientific computing. Theoretical analysis: partial derivative equation finite element approximate numerical techniques, finite differences, finite volumes, spectral methods, domain decomposition methods, isogeometric analysis. Applications to fluid mechanics, aerospace engineering, naval architecture, geophysics, acoustics, elastic, seismic and electromagnetic wave propagation phenomena; landscape architectural design using mathematical modelling; optimisation of sport performance (America's Cup boats, Olympic rowing, swimming); sport and rehabilitation engineering. Mathematical modelling for medicine: human circulatory system, cardiac integration (electrophysiology, ionic cell activity, mechanical contraction and relaxation, ventricular fluid dynamics, heart valve dynamics), aneurysm risk assessment, cerebrospinal fluid dynamics, optimisation of prostate implants and surgical planning.
