Ugo Majone

After moving back to Milan from Pavia, where he had been Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Ugo Majone was head of the Institute of Hydraulics and contributed significantly to the creation of environmental and territorial engineering at Politecnico di Milano. He was the first president of the study programme board in Civil Engineering for Soil Protection and Land Planning (later renamed Environmental and Land Engineering). In this role, he started a new and important line of teaching which placed Politecnico di Milano at the forefront in the international arena.

Ugo Majone has contributed significantly to the scientific-technical progress of hydrology and the management of water resources, with particular regard to the development of both physical and mathematical modelling of natural and artificial basins and watercourses. This is demonstrated by his prestigious publications in national and international scientific journals, as well as by the numerous books of which he was author or editor.

Professor Majone has held important positions in commissions, committees and scientific institutions, including in particular:

  • Italian delegate of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences
  • President of the Scientific Council of the National Research Council’s Water Research Institute
  • President of the Italian Hydrotechnical Association
  • Member of the Major Risks Commission of the Civil Protection Department of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers
  • President of the Ticino Consortium
  • Member of the Technical-Scientific Commission of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport for major infrastructural works (Water sector).

In all these positions he has contributed significantly to increasing the visibility of Politecnico di Milano as a relevant institution both nationally and internationally.
