Descrizione dell'iniziativa

The course "Teaching Mathematics at the Frontiers" aims to explore the role of mathematics as a tool for empowerment and social inclusion in contexts characterized by educational and social vulnerability, such as prisons, reception centres, and marginalized or peripheral communities.
The course will alternate between seminars led by external experts and hands-on workshop sessions focused on teaching mathematics in non-formal settings. Additionally, it includes a 6-12 hour practical internship, where students will have the opportunity to apply experiential learning methodologies in two OFF-Campus centres of Politecnico di Milano (San Vittore and San Siro). The program is based on innovative teaching strategies, such as collaborative problem-solving and informal learning, designed to overcome language barriers and differences in educational levels. Case studies and mathematical education projects in fragile contexts will be presented, with a particular focus on the experiences conducted at San Vittore prison, drawing inspiration from the METHEXIS project.Course Objectives

  • Understand the potential of mathematics as a tool for individual and social empowerment.
  • Analyze effective teaching strategies in fragile contexts.
  • Develop practical skills in designing and implementing mathematical activities for educational support and inclusion.
  • Support students in their formal educational journey.
Targeted at university students interested in mathematics education, educational sciences, and social policies, this course offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the value of mathematics beyond academia, as a powerful means to foster personal growth and autonomy.
