Agreement for innovation between Politecnico and Bruno Kessler Foundation
The Politecnico di Milano and Fondazione Bruno Kessler in Trento have signed an agreement with which they undertake joint actions in some strategic research areas: microelectronics, photonics, artificial intelligence, medical and biomedical technologies (MedTech), agriculture, industry and digital health, quantum sciences.
Bridging the innovation gap that separates us from Europe and that Europe needs to grow is the result of our ability to create a system, to build networks of excellence in the context of major technological challenges, first and foremost that of artificial intelligence.– With this in mind, the collaboration between Politecnico di Milano and Fondazione Bruno Kessler was born for the implementation of advanced platforms and materials according to a sustainable approach, at the heart of our development dynamics. The agreement will also make it possible to strengthen the skills of young researchers, focusing on higher education and PhDs as essential levers to increase competitiveness, in the certainty that the university is an extraordinary pool of talent.

In the field of photonics, both institutions have almost a quarter of a century of experience in the manipulation of light on silicon chips, a technology used in telecommunications, biomedical sensors, scientific instruments and recently also in quantum devices. The agreement will allow the parties to strengthen their expertise in integrated photonics, from technological research to university education, from manufacturing to chip integration in the most strategic applications. In this context, the activity of Fondazione Bruno Kessler and the Politecnico di Milano will focus on the activation of new platforms and new materials to make integrated chips increasingly faster, more pervasive and less energy-intensive.
The signing of this framework agreement represents a decisive step in the construction of a national innovation ecosystem, capable of addressing the strategic challenges of our time and, at the same time, of competing on a global scale. The collaboration between two institutions of excellence such as Fondazione Bruno Kessler and Politecnico di Milano not only strengthens research and advanced training, but paves the way for solutions capable of radically transforming the key sectors of our future, projecting Italy into a position of technological leadership. The future of research depends on the ability to systematize skills, talents and financial resources. In this context, tools such as joint PhDs and large-scale projects, funded both at European and Italian level, will become the engine of a concrete transformation.
