Agreement with MIT for new Bovisa North Campus

The agreement between the Politecnico di Milano and the Ministry of Infrastructures and Transport for the construction of the new "North Campus" of the Politecnico di Milano, co-financed by MIT for a total of € 45 million, was signed today.
The intervention is part of the extensive project curated by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop studio, which covers an area of about 325,000 square meters, owned by the Municipality of Milan (about 234,000 square meters) and the Politecnico (about 91,000 square meters) with the aim of regenerating the Bovisa - Goccia area and creating the new Campus inside, the design of which was entirely financed by the ION Foundation.
The agreement is based on the memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Infrastructures and Transport, the Ministry of University and Research, the Lombardy Region, the Municipality of Milan, Politecnico di Milano, FNM and RFI. It consists of fourteen interventions developed in a coordinated way: student residences, classrooms, offices, multipurpose room, spaces and services for catering, landscape, road system, infrastructures and underground services, art house, artificial intelligence laboratory, botanical greenhouse, water tower.
The presence of the Minister confirms an important commitment by the Government which recognizes in this initiative an extraordinary value for Milan. The nerve centre of the country, the city is getting closer and closer, in terms of vision, to the great European capitals. The expansion of the University Campus of the Politecnico di Milano marks not only the birth of an innovation district that aspires to compete internationally, but also a new green urban dimension open to public use where collaboration between institutions and companies can be make a difference.

The North Campus project involves a series of buildings characterized by a similar volume linked together by a photovoltaic roof. Around them are the protected buildings of the gas works, which will be refunctionalized, and a circular building intended for the auditorium. All will be connected by roads and outdoor arrangements, green spaces and infrastructure networks.
The first interventions for the establishment of the new campus have been started at the "gasometer park", where two new buildings will be located: the first dedicated to sport and the second to the birth of the Innovation Hub which will host laboratories of excellence and spaces for corporations and startups.
Starting from the issue of residences and high rents to urban regeneration, to sustainability, Milan is going through a period of transition and great challenges for the future. The university's response is important. The redevelopment project of the Bovisa area lays the foundations for a new development through virtuous collaboration between institutions. The Ministry's contribution joins that of other public and private entities that believe in this initiative and its growth potential.
